The Plateau of Late Potential

Schedule a Meeting

I want to share another great insight from Atomic Habits.

I want to talk about the Plateau of Late Potential.

Sounds fancy, but this is powerful.

But first, let me ask you a question.

How do you as a 401k or 403b participant become a 401k superhero to your future self?

That is the question and these videos will give you the answers.

I’m Jonathon Schultheiss and welcome to the Becoming a 401k Superhero videos.

So what is the Plateau of Late Potential?

I guarantee you’ve seen this before but you’ve never had a name for it.

Have you ever noticed when you start something new, you have a huge expectation for the results?

Maybe you started a new diet or a new workout routine.

In the first few days you actually saw negative results.

You expected good results, but you actually saw a step backwards.

Maybe you started a new diet for a week and you actually gained weight.

Or you started working out, and after several days you felt weaker than before you started.

This is very common.

But what happens when you push through those negative or small results?

You are usually rewarded with big improvements.

This is the Plateau of Late Potential.

You see, the problem is that most people give up when they experience the first negative result.

They never stick with it long enough to get the results they were looking for.

This often happens in our finances.

We set a big goal to get out of debt or save an amount of money in our savings account and what happens?

We experience a small setback.

Then we say, "I knew this wouldn’t work."

What we should really do is identify this as the Plateau of Late Potential.

We should expect small setbacks and not let them get in the way of our vision.

It’s like a Chinese bamboo tree.

Did you know that the Chinese bamboo tree spends 5 years underground?

Then it grows 90 feet in just 5 weeks.

Here’s my point, don’t let the Plateau of Late Potential stop you from reaching your financial goals this year or in the future.

Plan for it and know that if you stick with it, you will be like the Chinese bamboo tree.

Becoming a 401k Superhero is all about sticking to goals through what might look like a small setback.

I know you can do this.
