Your New Identity

Schedule a Meeting

As a New Year’s resolution, I’m trying to read more books.

One of the things I learned is that when you teach someone something that you’re learning, it helps you retain it better.

I want to share something from this book I’m reading called Atomic Habits.

Even though its not about finances, I was thinking about how to relate it to financial habits.

Today I want to share an idea from this book and I want to relate it to personal finances.

But first, let me ask you a question.

How do you as a 401k or 403b participant become a 401k superhero to your future self?

That is the question and these videos will give you the answers.

I’m Jonathon Schultheiss and welcome to the Becoming a 401k Superhero videos.

One of the things I found interesting in this book is that the author talks about how our habits are tied to our identity.

And how if we want to change our habits, the fastest way to do this is to change our identity.

Let me give you an example.

He talked about someone who may be trying to quit smoking.

If that person is offered a cigarette they may respond by saying, "No, I’m trying to quit".

However, if they were to change their identity, they may respond by saying, "No, I’m not a smoker".

You see, in the second response they have changed their identity.

That makes it easier to change the habit.

So how can I relate this to finances?

A lot of people who are trying to budget, save money, or get out of debt have trouble because they don’t identify as someone who can do it.

Let me offer you a new identity.

What if you related as a 401k Superhero?

Now when you are tempted to spend too much money, you can say, "401k Superhero’s don’t over spend on things like this".

Let me give you two tips you can apply this new identity to:
1. Creating an emergency savings account. 401k Superhero’s keep emergency savings accounts. They know that emergencies can come up and wreck your finances.

2. Reducing or eliminating credit card debt. 401k Superhero’s know how bad it is to have too much credit card debt so they do everything they can to pay it down as fast as they can.

For additional tips you can watch more of my videos at BecomeA401kSupero.com/employees.

And think about how you can apply these to your new identity.

Listen, if there is anything I can do to help you become a 401k Superhero, click on the link above and let’s schedule a time to talk today.
